Here Are the 18 States Where Marijuana is Legal

In 2011 there was not a single state in the U.S. where recreational marijuana was legal. Now, 10 years later, there are 18 legal marijuana states. Here’s a look at the 18 states where marijuana is legal.

Colorado and Washington led the way in November, 2012 when voters approved initiatives to legalize marijuana, for all uses, for those 21 and older. In the following years 16 other states followed course, with more expected to do so soon.

Below we will take a look at all 18 legal marijuana states (in no particular order), with a breakdown of the each state’s policies regarding possession limits and home grows (all 18 states have the age limit at 21 and older).

  • Washington State

Possession limit: 1 ounce

Home grow: No home grow

  • Colorado

Possession limit: 2 ounces

Home grow: 6 plants

  • California

Possession limit: 1 ounce

Home grow: 6 plants

  • Oregon

Possession limit: 1 ounce

Home grow: 4 plants

  • Nevada

Possession limit: 1 ounce

Home grow: 6 plants

  • Arizona

Possession limit: 1 ounce

Home grow: 6 plants

  • Vermont

Possession limit: 1 ounce

Home grow: 2 plants

  • Alaska

Possession limit: 1 ounce

Home grow: 6 plants

  • Connecticut

Possession limit: Legal to carry up to 1.5 oz  or possess up to 5 oz locked inside a home or trunk of a vehicle

  • Illinois

Possession limit: 30 grams

  • Maine

Possession limit: 2.5 ounces

Home grow: 3 plants

  • Massachusetts

Possession limit: Legal to carry up to 1 oz (28 g) outside the home, or store up to 10 oz (280 g) within a home

  • Michigan

Possession limit: Legal to carry up to 2.5 oz (71 g) outside the home, or store up to 10 oz (280 g) within a home

  • Montana

Possession limit: 1 ounce

Home grow: 4 plants

  • New Jersey

Possession limit: 6 ounces

Home grow: No home grow

  • New Mexico

Possession limit: 2 ounces

  • New York

Possession limit: 3 ounces

Home grow: Up to three mature and three immature plants per person

  • Virginia

Possession limit: 1 ounce

Note:

It’s worth noting that South Dakota voters passed an initiative to make their state the 19th with legal marijuana, but it was struck down by the state’s supreme court due to a technicality regarding the initiative language.
