Illinois Marijuana Sales Doubled in 2021 to $1.38 Billion

In Illinois marijuana sales in 2021 doubled that of the previous year and easily surpassed the $1 billion mark.

According to new data released by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations (IDFPR), there was $1,379,088,278.61 in legal recreational marijuana and marijuana products sold in 2021 throughout the state. This doubles the $669 million sold in 2020, which was the first year of legal sales for the state.

The biggest individual month for legal marijuana sales in Illinois in 2021 was December, with over $137 million sold. December was also the top month for 2020, with sales a little above $86 million.

According to the IDFPR, just shy of $1 billion in sales came from Illinois residents, with the remaining $436 million coming from those who live outside of the state.

In total there was over 30 million different marijuana items sold in 2021, a massive jump from the 14.4 million sold in 2020.

In Illinois it is legal for those 21 and older to purchase up to an ounce of marijuana from a licensed retail outlet. The first legal marijuana sales took place on January 1st, 2020.
