The Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission is meeting today to review and approve licensing rules for marijuana businesses, ahead of a July 1 deadline.
The meeting, which will include a public comment period, will begin at 10 a.m. in the Nebraska State Office Building at 301 Centennial Mall South in Lincoln. This comes roughly three weeks after the commission’s inaugural meeting and marks a critical step in the state’s expedited rulemaking process.
The meeting follows strong public support for medical marijuana legalization in Nebraska. In November, nearly 70% of voters backed Initiative 437, which allows patients to legally possess up to five ounces of cannabis for medical use. Voters also passed Initiative 438, which created the Medical Cannabis Commission and directed it to finalize regulations by July 1 and begin issuing business licenses by October 1.
The commission is expected to finalize these rules on schedule, setting the foundation for a regulated medical marijuana market in Nebraska.
