Delaware: Recreational Cannabis Sales Begin in Less than a Week

Delaware’s adult-use marijuana market is set to launch on August 1, marking a historic step as the state joins over 20 others with licensed recreational cannabis stores in operation.

To start, recreational sales will be handled exclusively by Delaware’s seven existing medical marijuana providers, each of which has received the green light to begin serving the broader adult-use market. Altogether, 13 dispensaries are expected to open their doors to all customers aged 21 and older on launch day.

Retail locations confirmed for the rollout include storefronts run by First State Compassion, Fresh Cannabis, Columbia Care Delaware, Field Supply, The Farm, and Best Buds. Cities like Wilmington, Newark, Dover, and Rehoboth Beach will all see the addition of legal recreational sales.

The Office of the Marijuana Commissioner describes this initial stage as a transitional phase that will give the industry a solid starting point while the state prepares to issue up to 125 total licenses. Full expansion has been slowed by challenges such as local zoning restrictions and background check processing times.

Although the limited launch has drawn criticism from advocates who argue it favors current operators, the arrival of retail sales still represents a major turning point in Delaware’s legalization journey.

The state passed its legalization law in April 2023 after Governor John Carney allowed two companion bills—House Bill 1 and House Bill 2—to become law without his signature. Under the law, adults can legally possess up to one ounce of marijuana, including up to 12 grams of concentrates. However, personal cultivation remains illegal for all users.

Sales beginning next week will include dried flower, edibles, extracts, and other THC-infused products, offering consumers a legal and regulated alternative to the unlicensed market.
