Massachusetts’ marijuana market has generated over $1.16 billion in sales so far this year, an over 10% increase from the same period in 2024.
From January 1 through August 24, licensed recreational marijuana retailers reported $1.06 billion in sales. July marked the strongest month of the year at $144.1 million, while May and June also topped $136 million each. August, with a week still remaining in the reporting period, had already reached $112.8 million.
Medical marijuana sales added another $102.9 million to the total. Monthly patient and caregiver purchases have been steadily declining over the past two years, falling from around $19 million per month in early 2023 to just $10.3 million so far in August 2025.
Combined, medical and recreational marijuana sales in Massachusetts reached approximately $1.163 billion in the first 237 days of 2025, a notable increase from the roughly $1 billion during the same period in 2024. The numbers put the state on pace to cross $1.7 billion by year’s end, keeping Massachusetts among the top marijuana markets in the country.
Massachusetts first legalized medical marijuana in 2012, with patient sales beginning in late 2015. Four years later, voters approved adult-use legalization through a 2016 ballot measure, making Massachusetts the first state on the East Coast to allow recreational marijuana. The first licensed retail stores opened in November 2018, and the program has since grown into one of the nation’s largest, with both medical and adult-use markets operating under the oversight of the Cannabis Control Commission.
