Ohio Marijuana Sales Pass $1 Billion Since Last August, Prices Down Over 30%

Ohio’s legal marijuana market has generated $1,056,237,970 in revenue since the launch of recreational sales in August 2024, according to the Division of Cannabis Control (DCC).

Between August 2024 and August 23, 2025, Ohio dispensaries recorded $751.6 million in recreational sales across 10,491,998 transactions. Medical marijuana brought in an additional $304.6 million from 3,271,984 transactions.

In total, the state has seen 13.8 million purchases over the past year. Average prices remain competitive, with marijuana flower selling for about $6.47 per gram, far lower than the $9.40 average in August 2024 (a 31% decrease).

Combined all-time sales from both medical and recreational markets now stand at $2.97 billion across more than 30 million transactions.

As of late August, 162 dispensaries had dual-use licenses, allowing them to serve both medical patients and recreational consumers. According to the DCC, there are 547 physicians certified to recommend medical cannabis.

Ohio voters legalized cannabis in November 2023, with the first recreational sales beginning August 7, 2024. Under the law, the state places a 10% excise tax on recreational marijuana sales, along with the standard 5.75% state sales tax and additional local sales taxes where applicable. Medical marijuana is exempt from the excise tax but remains subject to state and local sales taxes. Based on these rates, the state has garnered around $125 million in tax revenue between August 2024 and July 2025.
