Rhode Island marijuana retailers generated $10.39 million in sales in August, the second highest monthly total ever recorded, topped only by July’s record-breaking figure.
According to the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation, the new data brings the state’s year-to-date total to $79,166,178, purchased across 2,263,831 different transactions at an average of $34.97.
In August, adult-use purchases once again made up the vast majority of sales, at around 85%. By category, pre-packaged flower continues to dominate Rhode Island’s marijuana market with nearly $62 million in sales through August, far outpacing other categories. Raw pre-rolls rank second at $15.82 million, followed by vape cartridges at $13.05 million and edibles at $9.41 million. Concentrates ($3.43 million) and infused pre-rolls ($2.09 million) make up a smaller share, while bulk flower, tinctures, topicals, and other infused items contribute modest totals. Seeds remain at zero sales in 2025 despite being allowed under state law.
Rhode Island applies a 10% excise tax to recreational marijuana sales, on top of the state’s 7% sales tax and up to 3% in local taxes. Medical marijuana remains exempt from the excise tax. Revenue collected is directed to the General Fund, the Social Equity Assistance Fund, and municipalities hosting marijuana retailers.
Under current law, adults 21 and older in Rhode Island may purchase up to one ounce of marijuana at a time and grow up to 12 plants for personal use.
