Kansas Poll Finds 59% of Adults Support Legalizing Recreational Cannabis, 70% Support Medical

A new statewide poll in Kansas shows overwhelming support legalizing both medical and recreational cannabis.

According to the 2025 Kansas Speaks Survey, released by Fort Hays State University’s Docking Institute of Public Affairs, 70% of adults in the state say they support legalizing medical marijuana. Just 14% are opposed. When it comes to recreational marijuana, 59% say they support legalization, while 24% are against it.

The numbers are nearly unchanged from last year’s survey, underscoring steady public opinion on the issue. Kansas remains one of the few states in the country without legal medical marijuana, despite years of polling that has shown strong bipartisan support among voters.

The survey gathered responses from 526 Kansas residents aged 18 and older and covered a range of topics, but marijuana legalization was among the most prominent findings. With medical marijuana support hovering around 70% for multiple years, advocates are likely to point to the results as further evidence that lawmakers are lagging behind their constituents.

Recreational legalization also continues to draw majority support, putting Kansas in line with national trends. As of 2025, 24  U.S. states have legalized marijuana for adults 21 and older, while over 40 has adopted some form of medical program.

Despite growing public backing, legalization efforts in Kansas have repeatedly stalled in the legislature. Lawmakers have introduced numerous bills in recent years to allow medical use, but none have advanced to the governor’s desk.

With another legislative session approaching, advocates are expected to cite the new Kansas Speaks Survey as a call to action, urging lawmakers to finally align state law with voter sentiment.
