New York Marijuana Sales Hit Record $214.4 Million in August, $1.4 Billion Year-to-Date

New York’s legal marijuana market posted its strongest month yet in August, with dispensaries bringing in $214.4 million in sales, according to data presented today by the state’s Office of Cannabis Management.

The new record represents a sharp increase from July’s $161.6 million and June’s $153.2 million. For comparison, sales in August 2024 totaled just $104.3 million, showing how quickly the state’s industry has expanded in its third year of operation.

Kevin Brennan, deputy director of analytics for the OCM, said the steady rise reflects the ongoing rollout of licensed dispensaries and strong consumer demand. Year-to-date sales have already surpassed $1.4 billion, putting New York on pace to exceed $2.2 billion by the end of the year if current trends hold.

The OCM is officially projecting $1.8 billion in sales for 2025, but Brennan noted the figure could climb higher if monthly numbers continue at this pace. “We could be at $3 billion watch by the end of the year,” he said.

New York legalized recreational marijuana in March 2021 when Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act. The state’s first licensed dispensary opened in December 2022, marking the launch of regulated sales. Adults 21 and older are allowed to possess up to three ounces of marijuana and up to 24 grams of concentrated cannabis for personal use.
