Idaho Medical Marijuana Initiative Campaign Surpasses 102,000 Signatures Ahead of April 30 Deadline

Supporters of a medical marijuana initiative in Idaho have now collected more than 102,000 signatures, well above the roughly 70,000 required to qualify for the November ballot, as the campaign continues to build a cushion ahead of the April 30 deadline.

Despite surpassing the projected threshold, organizers with the Natural Medicine Alliance of Idaho say they are continuing to collect signatures up until the deadline. Because only valid signatures from registered voters count toward the total, the campaign is aiming to build a large enough cushion that even if thousands are invalidated, they will still meet the requirement to make the ballot.

To officially qualify, the initiative must meet both statewide and district-based requirements. In addition to the overall signature threshold, supporters must gather signatures equal to at least 6% of registered voters in at least 18 of Idaho’s 35 legislative districts, based on turnout from the last general election. This amounts to a total of 70,725 valid signatures.

If approved by voters, the Idaho Medical Cannabis Act would establish a regulated system allowing patients with qualifying conditions to access marijuana with a recommendation from a licensed physician. The proposal would allow patients to possess a limited amount of marijuana for personal medical use, while creating a statewide framework governing how products are cultivated, processed, transported, and sold. The measure would also establish a licensing system for businesses, including dispensaries.

Earlier this month, a study projected that Idaho’s medical marijuana market could generate approximately $108 million in annual sales if the initiative is approved, offering a glimpse at the potential size of the program. However, the immediate focus for supporters remains ensuring the measure qualifies for the ballot.

Idaho remains one of the few states where marijuana is still fully illegal, making this initiative one of the most closely watched efforts of the year. With the raw signature total now exceeding 102,000, the campaign’s next step is ensuring enough of those signatures hold up through the verification process to secure a spot on the November ballot.
