Virginia’s medical marijuana market brought in $90.8 million in sales during the first half of 2026, according to data from the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority.
The total includes $15.56 million in medical marijuana sales in June, bringing the year-to-date total to $90,823,099 through the first six months of the year. The state also reported 763,694 medical marijuana sales transactions during that period.
The average price for marijuana flower in Virginia’s medical market was $10.26 per gram during the first half of 2026, while the median flower price was slightly lower at $10.07 per gram.
Virginia’s medical marijuana program is currently the state’s only legal cannabis sales system. Although state lawmakers recently authorized the launch of adult-use marijuana sales, licensed recreational sales are not set to begin until July 2027.
The upcoming launch of adult-use sales is expected to significantly expand Virginia’s legal cannabis industry, while moving the state beyond its current medical-only retail model. Until then, patients registered under the state’s medical marijuana program remain the only consumers able to legally purchase marijuana through licensed dispensaries.
Virginia legalized marijuana possession for adults in 2021, but lawmakers did not establish a regulated system for recreational sales at the time, leaving the state without a legal adult-use retail market. The newly approved framework is expected to change that next year, with the Cannabis Control Authority playing a central role in regulating the market.
