Bob’s Burgers generally focuses on the Belcher family’s restaurant, financial struggles and strange adventures, but marijuana has occasionally appeared through pot farms, infused cookies, CBD jokes and brief references to smoking or selling cannabis.

Unlike animated comedies such as South Park or Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers uses marijuana sparingly. However, the show has produced two particularly memorable cannabis-centered stories: one involving the Belcher children unknowingly working at an illegal grow operation and another in which Bob and Linda accidentally consume marijuana cookies.

Below is a chronological breakdown of every clear marijuana reference in Bob’s Burgers, along with one later drug-related storyline that is sometimes interpreted as involving cannabis.

Season 3, Episode 3 – “Bob Fires the Kids”

This is the show’s biggest marijuana episode.

After receiving a box containing the few toys he had as a child, Bob worries that working in his father’s restaurant prevented him from having a normal childhood. He fires Tina, Gene and Louise from Bob’s Burgers for the summer and tells them to go outside and have fun.

The children quickly become bored and encounter Cooper and Beverly, an eccentric farming couple who offer them jobs at what initially appears to be a blueberry farm.

Cooper and Beverly say they have a terrible “weed” problem, laughing at a joke the children do not understand. Gene and Louise are assigned to pick plants inside a greenhouse, while Tina becomes the farm’s blueberry delivery person.

The operation’s true purpose is hidden from the children. Cooper and Beverly grow marijuana indoors and conceal it inside false-bottom blueberry containers for Tina to deliver to customers.

When Gene asks which plants are weeds, Cooper tells him they all are. Asked why the weeds are being grown inside, Cooper says it prevents them from interfering with the blueberries. He then jokes that they are going to burn the entire crop “one dime at a time.”

Tina delivers one box to Mr. Fischoeder, who appears to understand exactly what she is transporting. He asks whether her father knows what she is doing and agrees that they should keep it that way.

Another customer later arrives at Bob’s Burgers seeking a refund, complaining that his “blueberries” were mostly stems and seeds.

Bob and Linda inspect the box, notice that it smells like a music festival and finally realize their children are working at a pot farm.

Mickey helps Bob and Linda locate the farm, but law enforcement arrives shortly after they retrieve the children. The customer who complained about stems and seeds is revealed to be an undercover federal agent.

Willie Nelson also receives a marijuana joke when Gene says the singer would love the farm. Bob agrees, but says Nelson would enjoy it for a different reason than Gene assumes.

The episode concludes with Louise delivering a school presentation about why “blueberries” should be decriminalized. Her teacher tells the students not to Bogart the snacks and advises them to call a lawyer rather than their mothers if the police arrive.

Season 5, Episode 15 – “Adventures in Chinchilla-sitting”

Marijuana receives a brief but direct reference while Tina, Gene and Louise search for their missing class chinchilla.

Their pursuit eventually takes them to a roller rink, where they discover that a teenage girl sold the chinchilla to a security guard for $40.

When the children approach the guard and tell him that the thing he purchased for $40 belongs to them, he responds by asking, “You guys smoke weed?”

The children say no and clarify that they are talking about the chinchilla. The guard explains that he purchased the animal as a present for his landlord because he is short on rent.

It is a quick misunderstanding, but it is one of the show’s clearest direct references to smoking marijuana.

Season 7, Episode 5 – “Large Brother, Where Fart Thou?”

Bob and Linda accidentally become high after eating marijuana-infused cookies during a meeting with their accountant, Gerald.

While Bob and Linda are completing their taxes, Gerald offers them butterscotch cookies made by his friend Tim. Gerald eats two, Bob eats one and Linda eats three.

Gerald receives a phone call after all three adults have already eaten the cookies. Tim explains that he prepared two batches and accidentally gave Gerald the cookies containing marijuana. The infused batch was intended for Tim’s mother, who ate the ordinary cookies and wondered why she did not feel high.

Gerald tells Bob and Linda that the cookies contain “a lot” of marijuana. Linda becomes alarmed by the idea of getting stoned in the middle of the day because they are adults with children, although she briefly considers eating another cookie because they taste good.

The three initially insist they do not feel high, but the effects quickly become obvious. Linda repeatedly feels as though she is urinating, the group becomes overwhelmed by the numbers on their tax forms and Gerald grows increasingly anxious.

When Bob calls Gene, Linda warns him not to reveal that they are high. Bob nevertheless says they may be “a little high” before correcting himself and saying they will be late. After hanging up, Bob declares that Gene “totally knew” he was stoned.

Bob, Linda and Gerald spend the rest of the episode becoming distracted, putting tape on their fingers and building a cushion fort to hide from Gerald’s next client.

Before leaving, Bob reminds Gerald that he must finish and mail their taxes after he is no longer high.

Season 7, Episode 18 – “The Laser-inth”

Marijuana receives a passing reference while Bob and Gene try to attend the final rock-and-roll laser show at the local planetarium.

After discovering that the show is sold out, they approach a man outside who appears to be scalping tickets and selling other merchandise.

When Bob tries to get his attention, the man asks whether Bob is upset about “tickets, socks or marijuana,” suggesting that he sells all three.

Bob quickly says no and explains that he only wants to know whether the man has additional tickets.

The joke plays on the traditional association between marijuana, classic rock and planetarium laser shows. It is not central to the episode, but it is a direct cannabis mention.

Season 10, Episode 1 – “The Ring (But Not Scary)”

“The Ring (But Not Scary)” includes two related cannabis jokes involving Nat Kinkle.

After Gene loses Linda’s anniversary ring at a water park, Nat recruits a group of women to help search for it. She introduces them as the Puff Divers, an all-female organization of scuba and cannabis enthusiasts that she belonged to before becoming sober.

Nat says she misses everything about the group but needs to wake up in the morning “for the rest of my life.”

The second reference comes when the water park’s owner discovers the group after hours. Looking at the unusual scene, he demands an explanation for the children, the man in his underwear and what he calls a “marijuana bus.”

Although the episode does not show anyone consuming cannabis, the Puff Divers and their vehicle make the marijuana connection explicit.

Season 11, Episode 14 – “Mr. Lonely Farts”

CBD receives a reference through Gene’s imaginary adult friend, Ken.

After Gene is accidentally left home alone, he holds imagined conversations with Ken to keep himself calm. When Ken supposedly tells him to relax, Gene says Ken is always calm and calls him “Mr. CBD Oil.”

Near the end of the episode, Linda asks how Ken is doing. Gene says he is busy and “microdosing.”

Microdosing can involve several substances and is not necessarily a marijuana reference on its own. However, the earlier CBD nickname makes the episode’s cannabis connection direct.

The episode does not establish that Gene personally uses CBD. The reference is instead part of the elaborate fictional biography he has created for Ken, an adult albino whom the rest of the family does not believe exists.
