Study: New York is Top Marijuana-Consuming City in the World, Montreal Has Cheapest Prices

According to the the 2023 Cannabis Global Price Index, New Yorkers consume the most marijuana in the world.

The study found that New York City residents consume an average of 62.3 metric tons of marijuana each year, the highest amount in the world. Sydney, Australia came second with 45.8 metric tons per year, despite marijuana remaining illegal in Australia.

At 35 metric tons per year Los Angeles ranked third, followed by Chicago at 24.9 metric tons and Rome, Italy at 21.9 metric tons per year.

The remainder of the top 10 includes:

  • Houston, Texas
  • Toronto, Canada
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • Prague, Czech Republic
  • Vienna, Austria

When it comes to average marijuana prices, Tokyo has the most expensive marijuana in the world at an average of $33.8 per gram. This is almost $28 a gram most expensive than the cheapest average of $5.9 per gram in Montreal.

The cheapest cost per gram among US cities is Portland at $7. The cheapest illegal cannabis prices are in Bangalore, India with an average of $6 per gram.

The study predicts that the average price of cannabis will drop to $5.61 throughout the United States by 2030.

We examined the top and bottom cannabis-consuming nations to choose the study cities. Then, we looked at countries where marijuana is partially or fully legal, as well as those where it is not, and chose the final list of 140 cities to give the best comparison of the global price of cannabis.
