Arizona Made Over $25 Million in Marijuana Taxes in November, $230 Million Year-to-Date

For just the fourth time marijuana tax revenue in Arizona passed $25 million.

In total licensed marijuana retail outlets made $25,169,783 in tax revenue from the legal distribution of marijuana in November, based on data released by the Arizona Department of Revenue. Tax revenue comes from the sale of dried marijuana flower and prerolls, as well as marijuana concentrates, edibles, tinctures and topicals.

Marijuana tax revenue was down from October, albeit only slightly ($239k). Although marijuana tax revenue has only reached $25 million four times since the start of recreational marijuana sales, November was the second straight month this number was reached.

Year-to-date marijuana tax revenue is now $229,135,029, putting the state on track to top a quarter of a million dollars for 2023.

The total amount of marijuana taxes made since February, 2021 (the first month of legal recreational cannabis sales) now stands at $733,733,530.

The largest amount of marijuana taxes made in a given month remains the $28,423,424 garnered in May.

In Arizona marijuana was legalized in 2020, through the passage of a citizen’s initiative. Under the law those 21 and older are allowed to purchase and possess up to an ounce of marijuana, and up to five grams of marijuana concentrates.

Both medical marijuana and recreational marijuana receive a transaction privilege tax of 5.6%, with the latter also receiving an excise tax of 16%.
