Arizona made over $250 million in tax revenue from the legal distribution of marijuana in 2023.
According to data released by the Arizona Department of Revenue, the state made $23,737,758 in taxes from legal marijuana sales in December. This brings the total for 2023 to $252,872,787.
The total amount of marijuana taxes made since the start of legal marijuana sales in 2021 now stands at $757,471,288.
Tax revenue comes from the sale of dried marijuana flower, as well as marijuana concentrates, edibles, tinctures and topicals.
The largest amount of marijuana taxes made in a single month in 2023 was the $28,423,424 garnered in May. October and November were the only other months where tax revenue topped $25 million.
In Arizona marijuana was legalized in 2020, through the passage of a citizen’s initiative. Under the law those 21 and older are allowed to purchase and possess up to an ounce of marijuana, and up to five grams of marijuana concentrates, which they can purchase from a licensed marijuana retail outlet. Medical marijuana was legalized in the state a decade prior in 2010.
Both medical marijuana and recreational marijuana receive a transaction privilege tax of 5.6%, with the latter also receiving an excise tax of 16%.
