In Maine, February marijuana sales topped $18 million.
There was $18,014,488 worth of marijuana sold legally in February according to the Maine Office of Cannabis Policy. This is roughly half a million dollars more than the total sales for January, but around $1 million lower then December. Sales were distributed across 326,888 different transactions in the state, roughly 6,000 more than the previous month.
The average price per gram of dried marijuana in February was $7.30, just $0.01 more than the all-time low of $7.29 in January.
Year-to-date sales now stand at $35.5 million, with 648,333 total transactions.
In Maine, recreational marijuana was legalized in 2016, allowing those 21+ to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana and grow up to six plants for personal use. The law established a licensed, taxed and regulated system of marijuana businesses, but due to issues with its implementation the first marijuana store didn’t open until 2020.
Marijuana sales are taxed at 5.5%, with an additional 8% excise tax placed on marijuana-infused edibles. Medical marijuana sales are tax-free.

In August Maine Governor Janet Mills signed into law a bill that allows licensed marijuana businesses to take tax deductions equal to the amount they could take federally if they weren’t distributing a federally illegal substance.
