The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission (CCC) is on the lookout for a new Executive Director to steer the state’s thriving $7 billion marijuana industry.
According to the CCC, the ideal candidate should be a “tough, strategic thinker” capable of managing the day-to-day operations of the agency.
The Executive Director will be tasked with enforcing Massachusetts’ marijuana laws and regulations, reporting to the five Commissioners appointed by the governor, state Treasurer, and Attorney General. Commissioner Bruce Stebbins highlighted the job’s salary of about $187,000 per year, describing it as an “exciting opportunity” for someone ready to tackle the challenges of overseeing a state agency that regulates a federally illegal substance.
“We look forward to meeting the many skillful candidates who will be interested in this unique public service opportunity and finding the best fit to help us guide this agency into the future,” Stebbins remarked.
The position became vacant after the departure of former Executive Director Shawn Collins, who resigned in December amid disagreements with former commission Chair Shannon O’Brien. The new Executive Director will inherit a robust industry, with over 640 operational Marijuana Establishments and 106 Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers serving 94,000 patients.
Acting Chair Ava Callender Concepcion emphasized the need for a visionary leader to maintain Massachusetts’ reputation for safe and equitable cannabis regulation, especially with the potential for federal legalization on the horizon.
Interested candidates have until June 15 to apply. Finalists will undergo phone screenings and interviews before being presented to the full commission for consideration at a public meeting.
The new Executive Director will oversee a 135-person staff and work from the commission’s Worcester offices on a hybrid schedule, in accordance with state law.
