There are 24 states that have legalized recreational marijuana, with all but one allowing licensed marijuana retail outlets. Average prices vary greatly from state to state, ranging from a little under $4 per gram to around $15 per gram.

Using data compiled by state regulatory agencies and the research firm Headset, here are the five legal marijuana states with the most expensive average cannabis prices:

Arizona

• $14.41 per gram of dried marijuana flower
• $40 per gram of marijuana concentrates

New York

• $14.37 per gram of dried marijuana flower
• $57 per gram of marijuana concentrates
• Legalized: 2021

Illinois

• $13.98 per gram of dried marijuana flower
• $37 per gram of marijuana concentrates
• Legalized: 2019
• First store opened: 2020

Nevada

• $11.31 per gram of dried marijuana flower
• $23 per gram of marijuana concentrates
• Legalized: 2016
• First store opened: 2017

Maryland

• $11 per gram of dried marijuana flower
• $32 per gram of marijuana concentrates
• Legalized: 2022
• First store opened: 2023
