The price of cannabis differs significantly across the 21 states with legal recreational markets. Here, we explore the states with the lowest average costs per gram of dried flower.
Variations in tax rates, regulations, and other factors contribute to the wide range of cannabis prices from state to state. Using data from state regulatory agencies—and in cases where that isn’t available, insights from the research firm Headset—we’ve compiled a list of the states with the lowest average recreational cannabis prices.
Oregon – $3.43 per gram
According to the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission, the cost per gram of dried marijuana reached a new all-time low in February, at $3.43. This is a $0.07 drop from the average in January. The current price is over two-thirds lower than the $10.50 average in 2016.
Michigan – $3.50 per gram
Michigan, which legalized cannabis in 2018 with the first licensed store opening in 2019, has seen a significant drop in marijuana prices in recent months, reaching a new all-time low in March of $3.50 per gram and just $66 per ounce. This is according to data supplied by the Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency.
Massachusetts – $4.38 per gram
According to data provided by the Cannabis Control Commission, prices in Massachusetts continue to drop, reaching a new low in February of $4.38. This marks a 70% decrease from the $14.48 average in 2020.
Colorado – $4.39 per gram
Colorado saw a notable drop in prices from January to February, going from $4.71 to $4.39. Colorado tied Washington as the first state to legalize in 2012. Although prices have remained steady for years, they’ve seen a drop in recent months.
Ohio – $6.91 per gram
Ohio, which launched its recreational marijuana market in August, actually saw a slight increase in prices in February, up from the $6.74 average in January. However, at $6.91 Ohio still remains in the top 10 in terms of cheapest cannabis prices in the U.S.
Maine – $7.04 per gram
Maine’s prices dropped slightly in February, down $0.03 from the $7.07 average in January.
Washington – $7.08 per gram
Last month, Washington was the only state on the list where prices increased. This month, prices saw a moderate decline, from $7.18 per gram to $7.08.
