Ontario Marijuana Sales Pass $201 Million in August, Only Second Time Topping $200 Million

Ontario marijuana sales reached a new milestone in August, bringing in $201.37 million, according to data from research firm Headset.

It marks the highest monthly total ever for the province, and just the second time sales have surpassed $200 million.

The record figure pushed Ontario further ahead as Canada’s largest provincial market, consistently accounting for around 40% of nationwide marijuana sales. Alberta remains a distant second, with monthly totals typically around $85 million.

As in previous months, dried flower and pre-rolls continued to dominate Ontario’s market share, with vapor pens, edibles, and concentrates also contributing significant revenue. Beverages, capsules, and topicals made up a smaller portion of sales but have shown steady consumer interest.

Headset’s latest data underscores the continued growth and consumer demand in Ontario’s legal marijuana sector. With sales now topping $200 million for the second time (the last time being in August 2024), the province is on track to end the year with another record-breaking total.

Canada legalized recreational marijuana nationwide on October 17, 2018, becoming just the second nation to do so following Uruguay. Under the law, adults 18 and older can legally possess up to 30 grams of dried marijuana or its equivalent in public, share it with other adults, and cultivate up to four plants per household for personal use. Licensed cannabis retail outlets are authorized to sell cannabis and a variety of cannabis products both online and at brick and mortar locations.
