Tilray Celebrates Seven Years of Legal Marijuana in Canada, Maintains Top Market Position

Tilray Brands is marking the seventh anniversary of marijuana legalization in Canada by highlighting its role as the country’s leading cannabis company by revenue.

Canada legalized marijuana nationwide on October 17, 2018, becoming the first G7 nation to do so. Since then, Tilray has grown into the market leader with a portfolio that includes Aphria, Broken Coast, Hexo, Redecan, and other major brands. The company says it has invested over C$1 billion into Canadian infrastructure, paid around C$700 million in excise taxes, and helped create thousands of jobs in cultivation, manufacturing, sales, and marketing.

Blair MacNeil, president of Tilray Canada, said the anniversary is a milestone for both the company and the country. “Seven years ago, Canada made history by becoming the first G7 country to legalize cannabis nationwide, a bold step that has set a global benchmark. I am deeply honoured that Tilray played a pivotal role in this transformative journey,” MacNeil said.

Tilray reports that it currently holds the top sales position in multiple categories, including pre-rolls, beverages, oils, chocolate edibles, and most recently, dried flower. Its beverage brands, XMG and Mollo, command more than 40% of the THC drink market, while Chowie Wowie continues to lead in edibles. Flower brands like Good Supply, Broken Coast, and Redecan remain consumer favorites.

The company says it operates more than 5 million square feet of cultivation facilities in Canada, with production capacity of 210 metric tons annually. Tilray points to its role in pioneering greenhouse cannabis production in the country and developing new products like THC/CBD beverages and shareable edibles.

Looking ahead, the company says regulatory reforms will be key to future growth. Priorities include broader access to medical cannabis, on-premise consumption of THC beverages, and updated rules to increase competitiveness. Tilray also notes it is well positioned to expand further in the U.S. and Europe as legalization progresses.
