Two of Three New York Mayoral Candidates Say They’ve Purchased Cannabis From a Legal Shop

In a debate held yesterday, two of the three candidates running to be the next mayor of New York City answered in the affirmative when asked if they’ve purchased cannabis from a legal shop.

At the conclusion of the two-hour NBC New York debate, one of the moderators asked “Have you ever purchased anything in a cannabis shop, and if so what did you buy?”

Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, answered first, saying “I have. I have purchased marijuana at a legal cannabis shop.” Mamdani didn’t elaborate on the product or products he purchased.

Following this answer, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo who is running as an independent simply said “No.”

Curtis Silwa, the Republican nominee for mayor, responded by saying “When I was shot five times, I’ve had Crohn’s disease, I did use medical marijuana. Yes.”

New York legalized medical cannabis in 2016, with the first dispensary opening in 2016. The state legalized recreational cannabis in 2021, with the first licensed sales taking place in December 2022.

No other cannabis-related question was asked during the debate.
