Massachusetts Marijuana Sales Reach Nearly $500 Million Through Mid-April 2026, Resulting in Over $80 Million in Tax Revenue

Massachusetts has generated roughly $491.3 million in legal marijuana sales so far in 2026, according to data released by the Cannabis Control Commission.

From January 1 through April 12, adult-use marijuana retailers reported about $451.4 million in sales. Monthly totals reached $135.5 million in January, $124.4 million in February, and $136.0 million in March, with $55.5 million so far in April.

Medical marijuana sales added another $39.9 million during that same timeframe. Monthly figures came in at $12.0 million in January, $11.0 million in February, $12.0 million in March, and $4.9 million so far in April.

Combined, the data shows a steady start to the year for the state’s regulated marijuana market, even as pricing continues to decline. The average price of dried marijuana flower is now $4.03 per gram, down from $4.28 in April 2025.

Massachusetts legalized marijuana for adult use in 2016, with the first licensed retail store opening in November 2018. Adults 21 and older can possess up to one ounce of marijuana in public. The state imposes a 10.75% excise tax on retail marijuana sales, in addition to the 6.25% state sales tax and a local tax of up to 3%, bringing the total potential tax rate to 20%.

The $491 million in cannabis sales so far in 2026 has resulted in over $80 million in tax revenue for the state.
