Rhode Island Marijuana Sales Top $50 Million Through May, Slightly Ahead of 2025 Pace

Rhode Island marijuana sales reached $10.41 million in May, bringing the state’s 2026 total to just over $50 million through the first five months of the year, topping the about $48 million sold during the same period in 2025.

According to data from the Rhode Island Cannabis Control Commission and Metrc, licensed marijuana retailers sold $50,010,540 worth of products between January and May. The May total included $9.34 million in adult-use sales and $1.06 million in medical marijuana sales.

Sales in May were the highest monthly total of the year, slightly above March’s $10.03 million and April’s $10.07 million. January sales totaled $10.19 million, while February marked the year’s low point at $9.32 million. The average transaction amount for the five-month period was $36.09.

Rhode Island’s 2026 pace is slightly ahead of the same period in 2025, when retailers sold roughly $48.47 million from January through May. That included about $10.37 million in May 2025, making this May’s total slightly higher year-over-year.

Adult-use purchases continue to account for the vast majority of Rhode Island’s retail marijuana market. Through May, pre-packaged marijuana flower led all categories at $20.18 million, followed by raw pre-rolls at $10.02 million, vape cartridges at $8.52 million and edibles at $5.87 million.

Rhode Island legalized recreational marijuana in May 2022, with the first adult-use stores opening Dec. 1 of that year. Adults 21 and older may possess up to 1 ounce of marijuana in public and up to 10 ounces at home, while also being allowed to grow up to six plants, including three mature plants. Adult-use marijuana sales are taxed at 20%, consisting of the state’s 7% sales tax, a 10% marijuana excise tax and a 3% local tax.
