Illinois Cannabis Sales Reach $763 Million in First Half of 2026 as Prices Fall to Record Low

Illinois’ legal cannabis market generated approximately $131 million in combined medical and adult-use sales in June, bringing total sales for the first half of 2026 to roughly $763 million, according to new data released today by the Illinois Cannabis Regulation Oversight Officer.

The state recorded $118 million in adult-use cannabis sales and $13 million in medical marijuana sales during June. Added to the $632 million in combined sales reported from January through May, the figures bring the six-month total to approximately $763 million.

Despite a sharp decline in retail prices, June’s total was nearly identical to the $133 million in combined sales recorded during June 2025, indicating that increased purchasing volume has largely offset lower prices.

The average price of legal cannabis in Illinois has now fallen to an all-time low of $5.61 per gram, down 37% from $8.67 a year earlier.

Illinois legalized recreational marijuana in June 2019 when Governor J.B. Pritzker signed the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act into law. Licensed adult-use sales began on January 1, 2020, when the state’s first recreational dispensaries opened their doors. Adults 21 and older who are Illinois residents may possess up to 60 grams of cannabis flower, 10 grams of concentrate, and 1,000 milligrams of THC in infused products, while non-residents may possess half those amounts.

Adult-use cannabis purchases are subject to the state’s standard sales tax plus a potency-based cannabis excise tax of 10% on products containing less than 35% THC, 20% on infused products, and 25% on products containing more than 35% THC, along with applicable local taxes.
