U.S. Legal Marijuana Sales Reach $2.55 Billion in August, Bringing 2026 Total to Nearly $20 Billion
Legal marijuana sales reached approximately $2.55 billion nationwide in August, bringing sales through the first eight months of 2026 to roughly $19.1 billion, according to an analysis by The Marijuana Herald. August sales were less than 0.5% below July’s total but about 12% higher than August 2025, with California remaining the nation’s largest market.
New Ohio Marijuana Packaging, Labeling and Single-Serving Rules Now in Effect
New Ohio marijuana regulations governing packaging, labeling and single-serving products took effect September 11, establishing new disclosure requirements, packaging restrictions and testing standards for products sold at licensed dispensaries. The rules include updated requirements for product labels and containers, along with standards governing certain single-serving marijuana products.
Curaleaf Subsidiaries Respond to $31.8 Million Federal Appeals Court Victory
Curaleaf subsidiaries GR Vending MI and CURA MI say they are “pleased with the outcome” after the Sixth Circuit reversed a $31.8 million jury award in a marijuana contract dispute. In a statement provided to The Marijuana Herald through their attorneys, the companies also emphasized that they continue to support cannabis reform and the continued progress of legalization.
CBD and THC Combination Reduces Inflammation and Supports Dental Pulp Repair in Human Cells, Study Finds
A study published in the Journal of Endodontics found that combining CBD and THC reduced inflammatory signaling and promoted processes involved in tissue repair in human dental pulp cells. The combination produced stronger anti-inflammatory effects than either cannabinoid alone and increased markers associated with cell growth, migration, blood vessel formation and dentin-producing cells.
California Bill to Require Free Measuring Devices for Multi-Serving Marijuana Drinks Sent to Governor Newsom Following Unanimous Votes
California Governor Gavin Newsom is considering legislation requiring marijuana retailers to offer free measuring devices with certain multi-serving cannabis beverages. Assembly Bill 2532 passed both chambers without opposition. Beginning July 1, 2027, the devices would need to hold at least one fluid ounce and measure quantities to the nearest tenth of an ounce. Newsom has until September 30 to act.
CBN-Derived Compound Protects Dopamine-Producing Cells in Parkinson’s Study
A chemically modified compound derived from cannabinol (CBN) protected dopamine-producing nerve cells from death in a laboratory model of Parkinson’s disease. Researchers found that CS-11 strengthened antioxidant defenses, increased cell-protective gene activity and restored levels of tyrosine hydroxylase, an enzyme involved in dopamine production. Further research is needed to determine whether the effects translate to humans.
The States Most Likely to Legalize Adult-Use Cannabis Over the Next Couple Years
Several states could legalize recreational marijuana during the next two years as legislative sessions, ballot campaigns and elections reshape the political landscape. Pennsylvania and Hawaii remain among the strongest candidates for legislative action, while Florida could again put legalization before voters in 2028. New Hampshire, Wisconsin and several other states could also see their prospects shift following the November elections.

Medical Cannabis Associated With Sustained Pain and Sleep Improvements in Inflammatory Arthritis Patients, Study Finds
An observational study involving 192 inflammatory arthritis patients found medical cannabis treatment was associated with sustained improvements in pain, sleep and quality of life for up to two years. Researchers from Imperial College London and several other institutions analyzed patients in the UK Medical Cannabis Registry. The authors cautioned that the study lacked a randomized placebo control group.
California Company Seeks DEA Approval to Import Marijuana, THC and Psychedelics for Research
California-based Irvine Labs is seeking Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) approval to import marijuana, marijuana extract, THC and several psychedelic substances for research and clinical trials. The company plans to import raw marijuana plant material and extracts along with substances including LSD, mescaline, DMT, psilocybin and psilocin. Interested parties will have 30 days after publication to submit comments or objections.
