There was $146.3 million in legal marijuana sold in May in Massachusetts.
According to the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission, licensed marijuana stores sold $128.7 million worth of recreational marijuana and marijuana products in May. This marks a slight increase from the $125 million sold in April, and is roughly on par with the $129.4 million sold in March.
Medical marijuana sales for May reached $17.6 million, bringing the total for May to $146.3 million. Since the start of legal sales only March has higher numbers.
In Massachusetts it’s legal for those 21 and older to purchase and possess on their person up to one ounce of marijuana. They can possess up to 10 ounces at a private residence, and can also cultivate up to six plants. Marijuana can be purchased from a licensed marijuana retail outlet. Although the law was passed in 2016, the first marijuana store didn’t open until November, 2018.
Recreational marijuana receives the following taxes, with medical marijuana exempt:
- A state sales tax: 6.25%
- A state excise tax 10.75%
- A local option tax for cities or towns of up to 3%
As we recently reported, the cost of marijuana in Massachusetts is now just $6.05 a gram, which is an all-time low and a 58% decrease from the peak cost of $14.68 in January 2020.
