Massachusetts: Record Breaking $151 Million in Legal Marijuana Sold in June

In Massachusetts there was more legal marijuana sold in June than any month prior, according to data released by the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission.

In total marijuana stores in Massachusetts sold $151.8 million worth of marijuana and marijuana products in June. This includes dried marijuana flower and marijuana concentrates as well as products containing marijuana such as topicals and edibles.

In June recreational marijuana sales reached $132.8 million, with medical marijuana sales coming just shy of $20 million at $19 million. The combined $151.8 million is a record for Massachusetts, and marks a roughly $5 million increase from the $146 million sold in May.

Marijuana was legalized in Massachusetts in via a citizen initiative in 2016. The law allows those 21 and older to possess up to an ounce of marijuana and grow up to six plants. Licensed retail outlets are authorized to sale a variety of marijuana products.

The average price per gram in June reached an all-time low of $5.82. The average in May was $6.02, at the time a record low.

Recreational marijuana receives the following taxes, with medical marijuana exempt:

  • A state sales tax: 6.25%
  • A state excise tax 10.75%
  • A local option tax for cities or towns of up to 3%
