Montana Marijuana Sales Reach $28.5 Million in July, Break Monthly Record

In Montana July broke a record for the most legal marijuana sold in a single month.

According to data released by the Montana Cannabis Control Division, licensed marijuana stores sold $28,552,001 worth of marijuana and marijuana products in July. This beats the previous record of $27,098,679, set in March of this year, by nearly $1.5 million.

The marijuana sales total for July was $1.6 million more than the total for June ($26,935,335) and $2.5 million more than May ($26,096,828). Of the $28.5 million in marijuana sold, $23,505,205 was purchased by recreational consumers with $5,046,795 purchased by medical marijuana patients. These sales resulted in around $4.5 million in tax revenue.

Total marijuana sales since the first recreational marijuana store opened in January, 2022 is now $487,540,676, resulting in $76,488,403 in tax revenue for the state. $356,167,352 of the $487 million was purchased by recreational consumers, with $131,373,324 was purchased by someone who has a valid medical marijuana authorization.

In Montana’s those 21 and older are allowed to possess up to one ounce of marijuana, with marijuana taxed at 20% for recreational marijuana, and 4% for medical marijuana. The law legalizing recreational marijuana was passed in 2021, with the first marijuana store opening in January, 2022.
