Rhode Island Comes Just $40k Short of Breaking Monthly Marijuana Sales Record for Fifth Straight Month

Marijuana sales in Rhode Island fell just short of breaking the monthly record in September, something it had done for four straight months prior.

According to the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulations, in September there was $9,633,351.50 in marijuana purchased through licensed marijuana retail outlets. This is less than $40k less than the record-breaking $9,672,793 sold in August. In July there was $9.46 million sold, and $9.1 million in June.

$2.5 million of the marijuana purchased in September was done by an authorized medical marijuana patient. The remaining $7.1 million was purchased by recreational consumers.

The average sales receipt per marijuana-related transaction was $26.11, a slight increase over the $25.39 average in August.

The breakdown of marijuana products purchased in August is as follows:

  • Pre-Packaged Bud: 165,847  (last month: 181,043)
  • Raw Pre-Rolls: 173,433 (last month: 168,287)
  • Edibles: 63,123  (last month: 66,193)
  • Vape Cartridges: 50,535 (last month: 52,903)
  • Concentrates: 13,160 (last month: 11,197)
  • Infused Pre-Rolls: 12,031 (last month: 11,197)

Under Rhode Island’s recreational marijuana law, passed in 2021, those 21 and older are allowed to purchase up to an ounce of marijuana from a licensed retail outlet, and they can grow up to 12 plants for personal use. Marijuana receives a 10% excise tax which is in addition to the 7% statewide sales tax and a local tax of up to 3%. Medical marijuana patients are required to pay the 7% sales tax, but not the 10% excise tax.
