There was more legal marijuana sold in December in Massachusetts than any month prior.
There was $158.7 million worth of marijuana sold legally in December, narrowly breaking the previous monthly record of $158.3 million sold in August.
According to data compiled and released by the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission, $140.1 million of the marijuana sold in December was recreational marijuana, while medical marijuana sales reached $18.6 million.
Total marijuana sales for 2023 finished just shy of $1.8 billion. All-time sales are now $6.8 billion.
Sales data includes dried marijuana flower and shake, as well as marijuana concentrates and a variety of marijuana-infused products such as edibles, tinctures and topicals.
The average price per gram of marijuana in December was $5.66, a $0.05 increase over the record-breaking low of $5.61 in November. The average price per ounce was $160.83, an increase of $1.72 over the average for November.
Marijuana was legalized in Massachusetts in 2016, with the law allowing those 21 and older to possess up to an ounce of marijuana and cultivate up to six plants for personal use. The first licensed marijuana store opening in 2018. Recreational marijuana purchases include an excise tax of 10.75%, which is in addition to the standard statewide sales tax of 6.25%. Medical marijuana sales are exempt from both taxes.
