Athletes for Care, a nonprofit dedicated to the health and well-being of athletes, has endorsed Florida’s recreational marijuana ballot initiative.
“Cannabis has a long history in sports to help center athletes and aid them in recovery following both short- and long-term injuries,” said Clint Johnson, Executive Director of Athletes for Care, in a press release. “Our goal is to ensure that individuals of all backgrounds can enjoy access to safe, tested outlets to deal with the effects sports have on their bodies.”
Johnson says “Marijuana is an important tool to do so, and as it becomes more common across the country, it’s only right that Florida passes Amendment 3 and joins the growing list of states who enjoy the same freedom.”
In the press release, Athletes for Care highlighted its long-standing commitment to promoting safe, healthy outlets for the billions of people participating in sports worldwide. The organization has also worked on reducing concussions in football, improving athlete nutrition, and advocating for CBD and medical marijuana use among professional athletes.
Morgan Hill, spokesperson for Smart & Safe Florida, the group behind Amendment 3, said “We are honored to have the support of Athletes for Care, an important voice in how the legalization of regulated adult use marijuana can simply raise the quality of life for individuals. Our position is popular, and our campaign’s advocacy footprint is notable. We look forward to further showcasing the expansive and growing coalition behind ensuring that Amendment 3 becomes law.”
Amendment 3 would amend Florida’s constitution to allow individuals aged 21 and older to possess and use up to three ounces of dried marijuana flower and up to five grams of marijuana concentrates. These products would be available for purchase at licensed marijuana retail outlets and medical marijuana dispensaries with dual licenses.
According to polling released earlier this month by Emerson College, 64% of likely voters in Florida support Amendment 3, above the 60% requirement for passage (give it’s a constitutional amendment).
According to the Florida Division of Elections, Smart & Safe Florida has raised $95,352,144 for their marijuana legalization initiative, Amendment 3, as of September 6.
