In California, there was $327 million in licensed marijuana sales in January.
These sales mark a slight decrease from the $332 million sold in December, and the roughly $340 million sold in January 2024. In 2024, sales reached $4.2 billion.
According to the research firm Headset, dried marijuana flower remained the top-selling category in January, accounting for 31% of sales, followed by vape pens, prerolls, edibles, and concentrates.
The average price per gram of dried flower in December was $9.72, a notable increase from the $8.62 average in December (the lower price is likely contributed to holiday sales. Concentrate prices also increased slightly, from $16.24 per gram to $16.65. Blue Dream remained the most popular strain of the month.
California legalized marijuana in 2016, with the first licensed retail outlet opening in 2018. Despite considerable fluctuations in monthly sales, California continues to have the top cannabis market in the nation based on sales. Michigan is second, with around $240 million in sales in January.
