The nonprofit organization Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana held a press conference today to push back against legislative efforts that would limit access to medical marijuana, following overwhelming voter approval of its legalization last November.
At a press conference Monday morning, the group backed bills introduced by State Senators Danielle Conrad and Ben Hansen while condemning a proposal from State Senator Jared Storm.
“The people have spoken, and they have spoken resoundingly,” said Conrad, referencing the 71% of voters who approved medical marijuana. Despite overwhelming approval by voters, Storm’s bill, LB 483, would restrict marijuana to pill and liquid forms, a move NMM Executive Director Crista Eggers strongly opposed.
Egger says “This bill directly strips away what the people passed. It disregards our democratic process, and furthermore, it disrespects the patients in our state whom we have been fighting for all these years.”
Egger says the group supports proposals to ensure safe and regulated access to medical cannabis, but not laws that restrict its access.
“We want it to provide patients with safe and regulated access, we want it treated as a medicine, and we want to make sure they’re not burdened in getting access to the medicine,” said Eggers.
At a press conference today in the General Affairs Committee, which is still ongoing at the time of publication, dozens have spoken out in opposition to LB 483, with no member of the public speaking in support.
