The Great Smoky Cannabis Company (GSCC) in Cherokee, North Carolina, announced today that it will now be open seven days a week from 10 AM to 10 PM.
The company shared the update in a post on X.com, saying:
“BIG NEWS, FAM! You asked, you waited, and now—it’s OFFICIAL! GSCC is NOW OPEN ALL 7 DAYS of the week!”
The company continues by saying “No more waiting for the perfect day to stop by—we’ve got you covered all week from 10 AM – 10 PM! More days = More good vibes. More hours = More time to stock up. More YOU = More smiles all around!”
Since opening its doors to all adults 21 and older in September, GSCC has remained the only location in North Carolina where cannabis can be legally purchased. Operated by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), the store benefits from the tribe’s sovereign status, allowing it to regulate cannabis sales on its land despite the state’s prohibition.
Located in a former bingo hall that underwent a $50 million renovation, GSCC offers a variety of products, including flower, edibles, and concentrates—all cultivated by the tribe’s own facility. Concerns about law enforcement interference have proven unfounded, as there have been no reports of arrests related to purchases from the store or police checkpoints targeting customers.
The EBCI first moved to legalize marijuana in 2021, initially approving medical cannabis for tribal members. In April 2023, the tribe made history by voting to legalize recreational marijuana for all adults 21 and older, regardless of tribal affiliation. While early sales were limited to enrolled tribal members, GSCC officially opened to the general public on September 7, 2024, cementing its status as the first and only legal cannabis retailer in North Carolina.
The tribe’s efforts may be influencing broader policy discussions, with U.S. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) recently shifting his stance to support federal legalization and regulation of marijuana, similar to alcohol and tobacco.
