According to the DCC, licensed marijuana stores sold $230,383,626 in marijuana and marijuana products between January 4 and March 29 of this year, including $164,263,499 in recreational marijuana sales and $66,120,127 in medical marijuana sales. These sales were spread across 3,020,170 different transactions.
Total marijuana sales since the launch of the adult-use market on August 7 is now $628,070,076 spread across 24,267,631 transactions.
As of March 29, the average price per gram of dried marijuana sold at licensed cannabis retail outlets and dispensaries in Ohio was $6.95, similar to the $6.85 average on January 4, but considerably less than the $9.41 average in August.
Ohio voters approved recreational marijuana legalization in 2023, with sales beginning in August 7 2024. Those 21 and older can possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana and 15 grams of concentrates, while medical marijuana patients are allowed a 90-day supply, including up to eight ounces of dried marijuana or 26.55 grams of concentrates.
Recreational marijuana purchases are subject to a 10% excise tax, plus Ohio’s 5.75% state sales tax and local taxes ranging from 0.25% to 2.25%. Medical marijuana patients are exempt from the excise tax but must pay state and local sales taxes. Based on this tax rate, the state has garnered $29,673,408 in marijuana tax revenue so far in 2025, not counting any taxes brought in from local sales taxes.
