The average cost of marijuana differs widely across the more than 20 states where recreational sales are underway. This analysis focuses on the states with the lowest prices.
Because of major differences in tax structures, regulations, and other factors, cannabis prices can vary significantly between legal markets. Using information from state regulatory agencies—and Headset data where state data is unavailable—here’s a look at the states with the lowest average price per gram of dried marijuana flower.
Oregon – $3.47 per gram
According to data released by the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission, the average cost per gram in Oregon is $3.47, as of March 31. This is just a third of the $10.50 average in 2016, when sales first began.
Michigan – $3.80 per gram
According to the Cannabis Regulatory Agency, the average cost per ounce of cannabis in Michigan is $65.14. The per-gram cost is $3.80, slightly above the average in Oregon, but considerably lower than any other state.
Massachusetts – $4.43 per gram
According to the Cannabis Control Commission, the cost per gram of dried marijuana flower in Massachusetts is $4.43, a nearly 70% decrease from the $14.48 average in 2020, when sales began.
Colorado – $4.87 per gram
According to the research firm Headset, the average cost per gram in Colorado is currently $4.87, a bit higher than the state’s $4.71 the previous month, but notably lower the states that appear next on this list.
Ohio – $6.31 per gram
According to data released this week by the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control, the average cost per gram of cannabis is $6.30 as of April 19, the lowest price the state has ever seen.
Maine – $6.87per gram
Last month, Maine’s cost-per-gram of marijuana dropped to below $7 for the first time ever. As of the start of April, it dropped a little further to $6.87.
Washington – $7.18 per gram
Washington’s cannabis prices remain steady, putting them somewhere in the middle of legal cannabis states at $7.18 per gram.
