A customer shopping at Where Ya Bin, a new discount store in Clive, Iowa, discovered a sealed package containing about a pound of marijuana.
According to the Clive Police Department, the package—still sealed in a postal box—was found on May 23 inside one of the store’s product bins. The store, which sells overstock and undeliverable merchandise in bulk, had acquired the package through a resale shipment. The incident was first reported by KCCI.
Clive Police Chief Mark Rehberg said the package lacked a return address or any other identifying information, making it nearly impossible to trace.
“There is really no way to determine where it came from, who it was mailed from, where it was supposed to go to,” Rehberg told the Des Moines Register.
Undeliverable packages that go unclaimed can be resold as surplus merchandise, and that appears to be how the marijuana-filled box ended up at the store. Police say Where Ya Bin has internal procedures for handling these kinds of incidents and advised the store to notify them immediately if it happens again.
The store remained open during the investigation.
“Drugs get sent through the mail all the time,” said Rehberg. “To have a package not be delivered and then have a resale situation, that has never happened before. Now I can say it has.”
