Every Cannabis Reference in the Show Friends

Although the show Friends (1994-2004) rarely tackled drug use head-on, the show featured several humorous and unmistakable references to marijuana over its ten-season run.

From stoner guests to cannabis brownie mishaps and awkward parental confessions, cannabis made occasional but memorable appearances—often for laughs and character development. Here’s every clear reference.

Season 1, Episode 15 – “The One with the Stoned Guy”

Monica gets a chance to cook for Steve, a restaurant owner who could potentially give her a major career opportunity. The problem: Steve arrives extremely high after smoking marijuana in the cab on the way over.

Phoebe explains to Rachel that Steve “blazed up a doobie,” then clarifies by saying he smoked a joint, adding “weed,” “hemp” and “ganja” until Rachel cuts her off with, “OK, I’m with you, Cheech.” Steve’s marijuana use becomes the main joke of the dinner, as he becomes distracted, ravenous and wildly inappropriate, derailing Monica’s big opportunity.

Season 2, Episode 9 – “The One with Phoebe’s Dad”

During a Christmas-time scene, Phoebe casually says that a plate of brownies once told her a limerick. Chandler asks whether they were “funny brownies,” clearly implying marijuana brownies.

Phoebe says they weren’t especially funny, but adds that she thinks they had pot in them. The moment is a quick throwaway joke that fits Phoebe’s oddball backstory and the show’s tendency to treat marijuana references lightly rather than seriously.

Season 2, Episode 11 – “The One with the Lesbian Wedding”

Rachel’s mother, Sandra Green, announces she is considering leaving Rachel’s father and suddenly wants to be more adventurous. During wedding preparations, she asks the room, “Does anybody have any marijuana?”

Rachel is horrified, while Monica quickly responds that nobody is smoking pot around all the food. Sandra then says she never tried it, but thought she might. The scene uses marijuana as a generational shock joke, with Rachel embarrassed by her mother’s sudden desire to cut loose.

Season 3, Episode 7 – “The One with the Race Car Bed”

After Phoebe gives Monica a bizarre explanation for why the wrong bed was delivered, Monica asks, “Did you make brownies today?”

The line is an indirect marijuana joke, implying Phoebe may have made or eaten pot brownies. No marijuana appears in the episode, but the reference is clear enough in context and plays off Phoebe’s scatterbrained delivery.

Season 3, Episode 10 – “The One Where Rachel Quits”

Ross sells holiday cookies for a young girl after accidentally injuring her. He eventually discovers what he calls the key to his success: “the munchies.”

Ross says he sold 50 boxes after catching people leaving “Laser Floyd” at the planetarium, then started hitting NYU dorms around midnight and selling cookies by the case. Marijuana is never directly named in the scene, but the joke unmistakably relies on the stereotype of people getting hungry after smoking.

Season 4, Episode 2 – “The One with the Cat”

Phoebe becomes convinced that a stray cat contains the spirit of her deceased mother. Ross, skeptical as usual, asks whether she has been taking her grandmother’s glaucoma medicine again.

The joke is a subtle medical marijuana reference, playing on marijuana’s association with glaucoma. It’s also classic Ross and Phoebe: Ross tries to puncture Phoebe’s spiritual explanation with a sarcastic, science-minded jab.

Season 4, Episode 11 – “The One with Phoebe’s Uterus”

Phoebe visits her birth mother, Phoebe Sr., who says she was working on pottery. Phoebe misunderstands and reacts as though her mother may have meant pot, as in marijuana.

The joke is a simple wordplay moment, with “pot” briefly used as a marijuana reference before the scene pivots back to pottery and Phoebe Sr.’s eccentric personality.

Season 5, Episode 18 – “The One Where Rachel Smokes”

Rachel starts smoking cigarettes after realizing her new boss and coworker make work decisions during smoking breaks. When they offer to move away so they aren’t smoking around her, Rachel misunderstands and says she thought they meant “marijuana cigarettes,” adding “like doobies.”

Her boss jokes, “We get high,” before clarifying she’s kidding. Rachel awkwardly responds that she gets high too, then also says she’s kidding. The marijuana reference is brief, but clear, and works as part of the larger joke about Rachel desperately trying to fit in at her new job.

Season 6, Episode 9 – “The One Where Ross Got High”

This is the show’s most direct marijuana-centered episode. Monica and Chandler host Thanksgiving, and Chandler is confused about why Jack and Judy Geller dislike him. Ross eventually reveals that when he was in college, his parents caught him smoking marijuana, and he blamed Chandler.

The truth comes out during the episode’s famous rapid-fire confession scene, when Monica announces, “Ross smoked pot in college!” Ross admits that his parents once walked into his room and smelled marijuana, and that he falsely told them Chandler had been smoking it.

The episode uses marijuana as both a plot device and a punchline, turning Ross’ old lie into the reason Chandler spent years being disliked by Monica’s parents.

Season 7, Episode 8 – “The One Where Chandler Doesn’t Like Dogs”

During the Thanksgiving episode, Phoebe secretly keeps a dog named Clunkers in Monica and Chandler’s apartment, despite Chandler’s fear of dogs. After Chandler loses track of the dog, he says he looked everywhere, including the roof.

He then tells Ross that one of his neighbors is growing weed. It’s a quick aside and not part of the main plot, but it is one of the show’s clearest direct marijuana references.

Season 9, Episode 14 – “The One with the Blind Dates”

Phoebe sets Rachel up on a blind date with Steve, the same character from “The One with the Stoned Guy.” When Rachel calls to complain that the date is going terribly, Phoebe defends him by saying he gets a little crazy when he’s stoned.

Rachel says he is not stoned, but Phoebe asks whether he has gone out for a cigarette. Rachel says he has, four times, implying Phoebe believes Steve may again be using marijuana. The joke works as a callback to Steve’s Season 1 appearance, where he arrived at Monica’s dinner after smoking marijuana.
