North Carolina Governor Josh Stein took to social media today to highlight his administration’s Advisory Council on cannabis, saying it “will be tasked with making recommendations to protect young people from intoxicating THC products while legalizing adult use”.
In a video included with the post, the governor emphasized the urgent need to address the widespread availability of unregulated THC items in vape shops across North Carolina.
“In North Carolina, unregulated THC products are widely available in vape shops, posing risks to youth and adults due to the lack of legal age restrictions and clear labeling”, said Governor Stein in the video. “To address this, an executive order has established a State Advisory Council on cannabis to develop a regulatory system that protects minors, supports adult sales, ensures public safety, promotes public health, and benefits local agriculture.”
Stein says “The council will also review past convictions for simple THC possession and allocate revenue for addiction treatment, mental health services, and drug detection. The goal is to create a controlled market that prioritizes the well-being of children.”
Although the council was previously announced, today’s message served to reiterate its purpose and goals. The governor said the advisory council will develop a comprehensive regulatory framework that includes age restrictions, public safety protections, and guidelines to support public health and local agriculture.
The council is also tasked with reviewing past convictions for simple THC possession and recommending how potential future revenue could be used to support addiction treatment, mental health services, and drug detection initiatives.
“Our goal,” the governor said, “is to create a controlled market that prioritizes the well-being of children.”
