Maryland’s legal marijuana market reached a new monthly high in May, with licensed retailers selling roughly $135 million worth of products.

According to data from the Maryland Cannabis Administration, adult-use marijuana sales reached $124.24 million for the month, the highest monthly total for the state’s recreational market since sales began. Medical marijuana sales added another $10.83 million, bringing the combined total to approximately $135.07 million.

The strong May showing brings Maryland’s total marijuana sales for 2026 to around $530 million, putting the state on pace for another record-setting year. This marks a roughly 10% increase over the $480 million sold during the same period in 2025.

Maryland voters approved adult-use legalization in November 2022, with legal possession and retail sales beginning on July 1, 2023. Adults 21 and older may possess up to 1.5 ounces of marijuana, 12 grams of concentrated cannabis, cannabis products containing up to 750 milligrams of THC, and may grow up to two plants for personal use. Adult-use marijuana sales are subject to a 12% sales and use tax, following an increase from 9% that took effect July 1, 2025.

May’s total marks a significant jump from earlier monthly totals in the state’s market, further solidifying Maryland as one of the stronger adult-use markets on the East Coast.
