Ohio Marijuana Sales Surpass $320 Million in First Three Months of Recreational Market, Nearly $40 Million in Tax Revenue

Since licensed marijuana sales began on August 7 in Ohio, the state has recorded $320,719,313 in combined sales across both medical and recreational markets, according to data released today by the Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of Cannabis Control.

Between August 7 and December 7, recreational marijuana sales totaled $203,141,060, while medical marijuana sales reached $117,578,253. This period saw 2,537,211 recreational transactions and 1,179,673 medical transactions. The combined $320 million in sales resulted in around $38 million in tax revenue for the state.

The average price per gram has increased slightly to $7.47, up from a low of $6.99 the previous week. By comparison, prices in early August hovered around $9.42 per gram.

Ohio’s total marijuana sales, encompassing both recreational and medical markets, now stands at $2,220,982,307 across 20,046,688 transactions.

Under state law, those 21 and older are permitted to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana or 15 grams of concentrates. Medical marijuana patients are allowed to carry a 90-day supply, which includes up to eight ounces of dried marijuana and 26.55 grams of concentrates. The Ohio Division of Cannabis Control continues to regulate both markets, ensuring compliance and supporting the industry’s growth in this expanding sector.

In Ohio, recreational marijuana purchases are subject to a 10% excise tax on the retail price, in addition to the state’s standard 5.75% sales tax. Local municipalities may also impose additional sales taxes, typically ranging from 0.25% to 2.25%, depending on the jurisdiction.

For medical marijuana, patients are required to pay the state’s 5.75% sales tax. Unlike recreational sales, there is no additional excise tax on medical marijuana purchases.
