Arizona brought in $21.6 million in marijuana tax revenue in September, generated from about $103 million in sales, according to newly released Department of Revenue figures.

Th new figures push the state’s year-to-date total for 2025 to $212,545,285 from January through September. The taxes came from $103 million in September sales, and $902 million year-to-date.

September’s total includes $623,804 in medical marijuana sales tax, $2.94 million in adult-use sales tax, and $6.56 million from the state’s 16% marijuana excise tax. Another $1.35 million came from additional transaction privilege taxes. Those visible line items account for about $11.5 million, but Arizona’s monthly “total collections” figure also incorporates the shares allocated to local governments and the state education fund, bringing the total to just over $21.6 million.

Based on the 16% excise tax, recreational marijuana sales in September were roughly $86 million. Adding medical marijuana, which generated about $624,000 in state tax revenue at the standard sales tax rate, medical sales came in around $17 million. Together, Arizona’s marijuana market for the month was approximately $103 million.

Arizona voters approved recreational marijuana in November 2020 through Proposition 207, with the first licensed retail sales beginning on January 22, 2021. Since then, the industry has become a major revenue generator, funding public health, community colleges, transportation, and public safety alongside contributions to local and state general funds.
