$50 Million in Legal Marijuana Sold in Illinois in April, $295 Million So Far in 2023

According to data released by the Illinois Cannabis Regulation Oversight Officer, the state sold $50 million worth of legal marijuana and marijuana products in April.

Of the $50 million sold, $32.3 million came from the distribution of medical marijuana, while $18.4 million came from recreational marijuana sales.

The year-to-date total for medical marijuana sales is now $149.6 million. The total for recreational marijuana is $146 million, bringing the combined total to $295.6 million. This puts the state on track to sell nearly $1 billion by the end of 2023.

Marijuana was legalized in Illinois in 2019, with the first marijuana store opening the following year.

The possession limit for Illinois residents aged 21 and older:

  • 30 grams of cannabis flower;
  • 5 grams of cannabis concentrate; and
  • No more than 500 milligrams of THC contained in a cannabis-infused product;
    and

The possession limit for non-Illinois residents:

  • 15 grams of cannabis flower;
  • 2.5 grams of cannabis; and
  • No more than 250 milligrams of THC contained in a cannabis-infused product

In 2022 there was $1,552,324,820 in marijuana and marijuana products legally sold in Illinois, a 12% increase from 2021 and a 131% increase from 2020.

An Illinois bill that would explicitly prevent law enforcement from using the smell of burnt or unburnt marijuana from being used as probable cause to justify a police search was passed by the state’s full Senate in late March, and currently sits in the Senate Rules Committee.
