Arizona brought in $24,791,091 in marijuana tax revenue in May, pushing the state’s year-to-date revenue past $122 million, according to new data from the Arizona Department of Revenue.
May’s total includes $16.1 million from the 16% excise tax on recreational marijuana, $7.2 million from the Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT) on adult-use sales, and over $1.4 million from TPT on medical marijuana transactions. An additional $633,090 came from taxes that were previously reported under the general retail category.
Arizona has now generated $122,379,889 in marijuana tax revenue from January through May. That includes $26.1 million in January, $24.9 million in February, $24.2 million in March, and $22.4 million in April.
Recreational marijuana sales in Arizona remain the primary driver of tax revenue, with the combined adult-use excise tax and TPT totaling over $23.3 million in May alone. Medical marijuana, while exempt from the excise tax, continues to contribute through TPT collections.
The state legalized recreational marijuana in November 2020 through Proposition 207, with sales launching in January 2021. Revenue from marijuana taxes supports various public programs, including community colleges, public safety, highways, and the judicial system.
