Washington Legislature Passes Bill to Alter Possession Limit for Marijuana-Infused Liquids

Washington’s full legislature has approved a bill to alter the state’s possession limit for marijuana-infused liquids, sending it to Governor Jay Inslee for consideration.

Washington’s House of Representatives voted 88 to 9 earlier this month to pass House Bill 1249. On February 22 the measure was passed through the whole Senate 47 to 1.

Now, the measure will be sent to Governor Jay Inslee for consideration. Even if Inslee chooses to veto the measure, it has well more than the 2/3rds support required to override a veto.

Under current Washington law those 21 and older can possess up to 72 ounces of marijuana-infused products in liquid form, given it has no more than 100mg of THC per product and no more than 10mg THC per serving. House Bill 1249 and companion measure Senate Bill 5340 would make it so that a retailer “may sell more than 72 ounces of cannabis-infused product in liquid form if the product is packaged in individual units containing no more than four milligrams of THC per unit.”

The measure clarifies that “a person 21 years of age or older may legally possess the amounts above and may transfer half of such amounts to another person or persons 21 years of age or older if the transfer complies with other applicable requirements.”

Washington legalized marijuana in November, 2012, tying Colorado as the first state to do so. In the over 11 years since the law passed, lawmakers have made no changes to the state’s marijuana possession limit, despite making numerous other alterations.
