California: Over $350 Million in Legal Marijuana Sold in May, $1.7 Billion Year-to-Date

Legal marijuana sales in California surpassed $350 million in May, bringing the year’s total to over $1.7 billion.

Licensed marijuana stores in California sold $355 million worth of marijuana and related products in May. Although this represents a modest 0.5% decrease from the previous month, it marks a 4% increase compared to the previous May.

The average price per gram of dried marijuana flower in California in May was $9.56, with the average price of an eighth being $24. Concentrates averaged $17 per gram.

In May, the plurality of marijuana sales was attributed to marijuana flower at $117 million, followed by vape products at $97 million, pre-rolls at $62 million, edibles at $40 million, concentrates at $20 million, and all other products (such as beverages and capsules) at $18 million.

California legalized marijuana in 2016, four years after Colorado and Washington became the first states to do so. The law allows those 21 and older to purchase, possess, and use marijuana, while also allowing them to grow marijuana for personal use at a private residence.

Earlier this month the Senate’s Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee voted 9 to 2 to pass Assembly Bill 1775, which would legalize marijuana cafés. The committee’s approval comes roughly three weeks after it passed the Assembly by a vote of 58 to 6.

Recently it was announced that the California State Fair is set to make history this July by integrating onsite marijuana sales and consumption, ushering in a new era as the first time cannabis will be legally sold at a state fair.
