Canada: Over $2.4 Billion in Legal Marijuana Sold in First Half of 2024

According to data compiled and released by Statistics Canada, there was over $2.4 billion worth of marijuana and marijuana products sold legally in the first half of 2024.

Between January and June of this year, licensed marijuana stores sold $2.425 billion in legal marijuana, putting the nation on track for nearly $5 billion for the year.

During this period, May saw the highest amount of marijuana sales with $413.6 million. February experienced the lowest sales with $386.8 million.

Ontario by far had the most marijuana sales of any province, with nearly $1 billion ($934.6 million). Alberta was second with around $440 million, followed by Quebec at $343.1 million and British Columbia at $287.5 million.

Canada legalized marijuana in 2018 through its parliament, via legislation proposed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Under the law those 18 and older can purchase and possess up to 30 grams of marijuana and up to 10 grams of marijuana concentrates. They are also allowed to cultivate up to four marijuana plants for personal use.

Throughout Canada, there are now nearly 4,000 licensed marijuana stores. Marijuana receives an excise tax which is added prior to marijuana products reaching consumers. Consumers must also pay a sales tax, which ranges from 5% to 15% depending on the province. Marijuana flower and pre-rolls are taxed at either a flat rate of 1 Canadian dollar (CA$0.72) per gram or 10% of the gram’s wholesale price, whichever is greater.
