With recreational marijuana now legal in 24 states, the cost of marijuana varies widely across the nation.

Among the 23 states that allow licensed recreational marijuana sales, prices vary pretty drastically. This is due to a variety of reasons, including state-specific regulations and taxes.

With that in mind, using data compiled by state regulatory agencies and the research firm Headset, here are the 10 legal marijuana states with the cheapest average prices per gram of dried flower:

Oregon

$3.78 per gram

Oregon consistently offers the most affordable legal marijuana in the country. As of the end of July, the average price for dried flower was $3.78 per gram. Although this is slightly higher than the state’s all-time low of $3.60, the price remains the lowest in the nation.

Oregon legalized recreational marijuana in 2014, and the first retail outlets began operating in 2016.

Massachusetts

$5.06 per gram

The average price for a gram of dried marijuana flower in Massachusetts is $5.06, per state data updated in July. Massachusetts prices are noticably higher than Oregon, but considerably lower than the next state on the list.

Washington

$6.95 per gram

Washington, which first legalized recreational marijuana in 2012, now has an average price of $6.95 per gram as of August 2024. Prices have shown little fluctuation in recent months, maintaining a consistent trend.

The state legalized marijuana during the November 2012 election, tying Colorado as the first state to do so, with marijuana stores opening in 2014.

Michigan

$7.00 per gram

In Michigan, the average price of marijuana is nearly the same as Washington, at $7 per gram.

Michigan voters legalized marijuana in November 2018, with the first licensed retail outlet opening the following year.

Maine

$7.25 per gram

As of August 2024, the average price per gram of marijuana in Maine is $7.25, continuing a trend of steady prices over the past year.

Marijuana was legalized in Maine via the initiative process in 2016, with the first licensed marijuana store opening in October 2020.

Colorado

$8.65 per gram

In Colorado, the average price per gram of dried marijuana flower is $8.65 as of July 2024. Prices have gradually declined over the years as the market continues to mature.

Rounding out the top ten, New Mexico’s average price per gram of marijuana stands at $9.75, according to data released by the state in July.
