Trump Says He “Agrees a Lot More” with Marijuana Legalization as More States Legalize

Former President Donald Trump, the current Republican nominee for president, is beginning to “agree a lot more” that marijuana should be legalized.

Donald Trump speaking at a press conference at Mar-a-Lago.

“As we legalize it, I start to agree a lot more because, you know, it’s being legalized all over the country,” said Trump at a press conference held today. “Florida has something coming up. I’ll be making a statement about that fairly soon.”

Trump’s comments were made in response to a reporter questioning him on the Biden Administration’s move to reschedule marijuana, and Vice President Harris’ stance that no one should be jailed for marijuana.

Trump said “As we legalize it throughout the country, whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing, it’s awfully hard to have people all over the jails that are in jail right now for something that’s legal. So I think obviously there’s a lot of sentiment to doing that.”

During his first term a spresident, Trump adopted a largely hands-off approach to state marijuana laws. His administration’s first Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, did rescind the Obama-era Cole Memo, which provided guidelines for federal prosecutors in states where marijuana was legal. However, Trump himself did not actively pursue policies against marijuana legalization.

Trump’s comments come as marijuana reform continues to gain traction nationwide, with 24 states having legalized it. A recent Fox News poll found that 69% of voters support marijuana legalization nationwide.
